When Coral and I were taking our course at the Haliburton School of the Arts, we realized this is a course we would love to teach. We also realized that to get the most out the dyeing baths once they are prepared, it would have been good to have done some homework (yes that is the teachers talking) ahead of time. If you have ever had an interest in preparing your own cloth and would like to take such a course, there is a book I would like to recommend that would help in preparing you ahead of time, especially in dyeing stitched pieces. It is called,
"Shibori" by
Janice Gunner. Janice Gunner resides in the British Isles. In 1999, she won the Jewel Pearce Patterson Award for International Quilt Teachers. Her works are held in museums and and private collections.
What I love about the book is the simple but clear diagrams that demonstrate how to do each of the techniques I have mentioned in a prior blog.
Of course, there are also some lovely examples of the fabrics, once dyed, put together.
Another book that I was able to preview from the Haliburton School of the Arts Library that is very informative is, "The Inventive Art of Japanese Shaped Resist Dyeing" by Yoshiko Wada and Mary Kellogg Rice.
Yes, I am obsessed!
